Chuncheon, The City of Lakeside
Chuncheon is situated in the central area of Korea is located in the southern region close to the merging point of Bukhan river branch and Soyang river main stream. The south borders with Hwacheon-gun, Yanggu-gun, the west is adjacent to Gapyeong-gun, the north is close to Hongcheong-gun and the east is adjacent to Inje-gun. Representing flower is forsythia , tree is ginko tree, bird is weavebird, and the city representing animal is a tiger.
Chuncheon is located in the center of erosion basin of Bukhan River, the city areas are developed in the center of the lakeside to form a waterside city, also know as city of lakeside called Hoban.
At the center of the city lays Bongui mountain of Chuncheon. Since Chuncheon is located in the inland area, there are relatively high rainfall rate due to severe climate changes of the continental climate or geographic features, and there are many foggy days as the city is surrounded by the lake. The average temperature of January is -4.5 degrees, average temperature of August is 24.3 degrees, and annual average temperature is 10.9 degrees. The highest and lowest temperature are recorded as 39.5 degress and -31 degrees relatively. Annual average rainfall rate is 1,200mm and is concentrated in the summer.
Especially, since Dams are well developed in Chunchoen, many visitors make a trip to Eui-Am lake , Soyang lake and Chuncheon lake. Tourism routes are also well developed to attract visitors with fishing, and water sports interested groups. Chuncheon is also known as the No. 1 city within the Gangwon-do in administration, culture and commercial. Moreover, the city is called as the city of lakeside due to Chuncheon lake, Soyang lake and Eui-Am lake. As a location where the famous ‘Winter Sonata’ was filmed, countless national and international visitors make a visit to Chuncheon while established its reputation as a tourism city.
The local specialty of Chuncheon include chicken galbi,, spicy grilled chicken and Makguksu. Each year, a range of culture event such as mime festival, chicken galbi and Makguksu festival and international play festivals take place to advertize the city as artistic and romantic city. Moreover, Chuncheon is a region that is suitable for the development of bioindustry that is searching a development plan with Gangwon-Do to active bioindustry which is a promising business that can be applied to agriculture, environmental, biology, food, medicine, chemistry and virtually every aspects of the daily life.
The city is relatively free from various regulations including Water Supply Source Protection Areas. Each approach to the capital area by expressway and metro has allowed the city to attract well educated labor force. As a result, the city center is designated as product technology consulting regional base center promoted by Korea Food and Drug Administration, and ‘The Scripps Research Institute’ which has the world famous reputation as a new medicine developing institute has made the city as its home-town.
